Protect art and monuments

In Florence, every stone tells a story: don't sit on monuments or church cornices, don't touch statues or frescoes, don't carve or place objects on historic facades, don't sit on the sidewalks or on the steps of churches and palaces to eat or drink.

So you don't have to wait

In Florence some museums have very long queues o limited time slots, so it's highly recommended to book online in advance. Here are the most important ones where it's best to do so.

Museums that are best booked online (almost essential)

  • Uffizi Galleries
  • It is the most visited museum in Florence: without reservation you can also find 1–2 hours of queueBooking online allows you to enter at a specific time and skip the line.

  • Galleria dell'Accademia (where Michelangelo's David is located)
  • Here too the queues are very long; booking is highly recommended and often mandatory for priority entry.

  • Palazzo Vecchio
  • Museo Novecento
  • Stefano Bardini Museum

For these museums you can book online to choose the time and avoid waiting, especially on weekends or in high season.

Places where reservations are often required (for access with limited time slots)

  • Brancacci Chapel
  • Torre di Arnolfo

Palazzo Vecchio, Arnolfo's Tower, the Museo Novecento, the Bardini Museum, the Brancacci Chapel, along with the Santa Maria Novella Museum and the Salvatore Romano Foundation, are all part of the Florentine Civic Museums. You can purchase tickets here: https://bigliettimusei.comune.fi.it/

Practical advice

Always book online Uffizi, Accademia and Duomo attractions; for other museums you can often get in without major problems but booking is still useful during crowded periods.

Behaviors to avoid

  • Maintain decent clothing: in places of worship it is preferable not to wear tank tops, trousers that are too short or sandals
  • Do not use your cell phone in museums and churches
  • Don't linger too long in front of a monument or work of art; others have the right to see it too.

Did you know that… It is not permitted to use the monumental fountains to bathe?

Periodically, during the summer season, people are caught misusing Florence's monumental fountains, even bathing in them.

à It's important to know that this is expressly prohibited and you risk a fine as per the city police regulations. In general, it's forbidden to enter or climb monuments, climb fences, enter even partially into basins and fountains, or throw or immerse objects in them (except when common tradition calls for throwing coins).
